Imperial Probe droids coming to a city near you!

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Gizmodo covers a Reuters report on Honeywell Micro Air Vehicles soon to be deployed in the Miami area. The spy drones are intended to keep a literal eye on criminals and innocent bystanders “…with forward and downward looking cameras, flying over a 100 waypoint flight plan at 57MPH, and from 10,500-foot altitude.” Not sure exactly what all that means - but it sure looks cool and sounds menacing! We hear though, when confronted, they get nervous and self-destruct. Jump over to Gizmodo for some cool video of these modern-day Probe Droids in action with a hauntingly familiar soundtrack!

Lightsabers make NY bus stops safer more interesting. Saga begins on Spike April 4.

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Spike TV - 3 years after acquiring the rights to show all 6 Star Wars films on basic cable - has launched a new ad campaign on the streets of NY city where a few Jedi on patrol probably wouldn’t hurt. Instead of putting up a standard, back-lit poster on these display cases, they used colored florescent tubes to resemble Lightsabers. Cool idea! Wonder how long it will be before someone tries to rip them off? The Saga begins on Spike on April 4th. (via Urbanite)

Mark Boudreax

Mark Boudreax was a co-op working for Kenner and a lead designer on the vintage Star Wars line. Thirty years later, he’s still working for Hasbro and also happens to be the face on the Endor Rebel Trooper action figure. He is a graduate of the school of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning at the University of Cincinnati. In addition, the second page of the article talks about another UC alum, Jim Swearingen who also has worked for Kenner on the Star Wars toy line.

Doomed by Windows - But Still Cool

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

We couldn’t help but notice a certain astomechy resemblance from this PC case mod over at The Contaminated. While not necessarily a work of art on the inside, the outside certainly had us at “BOOP!” Unfortunately, it appears to be Windows-powered, which means this little R2 unit can expect a short life and lots of downtime - which when you think about it, isn’t so bad if you have a dead PC sitting around doing nothing when it looks like this. Holy Papercraft Protocol Droids!

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

In case you’ve got nothing better to do than fold paper into miniature-yet-sweet works of space-laden origami-goodness, here’s a weekend project for you: roll your own protocol droid! In this case - K-3P0 from The Empire Strikes Back! That seems like an awful lot of work for something that could be accidentally destroyed by a cat, wayward pillow, or slight breeze. Still pretty cool though! Click on through to Gizmodo for more.
