You might be asking yourself why this news is relevant to a Star Wars Collector’s Club? It matters because our favorite feisty astromech has a cameo appearance courtesy of the special effects wizards at ILM! Here’s the droid everyone’s been looking for in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance in the new Star Trek film, which went on sale on November 17th. Click the image above for the larger size.

Yeah, so it’s not Star Wars. It’s still worth checking out.

Members of OSWCC headed south last weekend for the annual Kentucky Star Wars Collectors Club Fall Festival. The Fall Festival is a state-wide get together for members of KSWCC to socialize, sell items, win raffle prizes, fundraise and have a day of Star Wars themed family fun. Members of the Ashland, Lexington and Louisville groups were in attendance, as well as artists and other special guests. The OSWCC crew would like to thank KSWCC for welcoming us and letting us participate in the event. It was a very smooth event, and a great time was had by all.  For more information on KSWCC, go to www.kswcc.com.

OSWCC participates in John Williams Cincinnati Pops concert

September 15th, 2009

Mark and Anthony Daniels

The South Region of OSWCC was pleased to join Anthony Daniels and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra this past weekend for two nights of the John Williams Spectacular. This concert series was especially meaningful due to the recent passing of Maestro Erich Kunzel, and featured a heartfelt video tribute from Mr. Williams himself. There was a selection of pieces that were arranged by the late conductor of the Pops during the first half, followed by selections from all six Star Wars films during the second half. Anthony Daniels hosted the Star Wars portion of the program, and was humorous and engaging as he told the story of the saga. OSWCC had a table presence both nights in the lobby, and passed out information on the club as well as some free merchandise. It was a great experience, hearing the music from the movies performed live is absolutely incredible. Check out photos from the event here.

This is the ninth in a series featuring our members

Name: Dan Flarida
Region: South

* Age: 37

* Hometown: Lebanon, OH

* Occupation: Product Manager for LADD Industries (electrical connector distributor)

* Time in OSWCC: 12 years

* Family: My wife Kari and two cats Morey and Lily

* Favorite Movie: Favorite Star Wars movie is Empire Strikes back.  Favorite movie of all time is a toss up between Gladiator and Braveheart.

* Collecting Focus: Anything made by Kenner.  My goal is to have a production toy and pre-production item from every Kenner toy line.  I also really like Kenner internal items like business cards, binders, employee awards, etc.  Basically anything used inside Kenner.  My Star Wars focus is anything related to the A-Wing and Gentle Giant busts.  I also like Sea Wees.

* Star Wars fan since: As far back as I can remember.

* Favorite character: Ben Kenobi

* Favorite item in your collection:  Vintage hand-painted hard copy A-Wing used in all of the photography on the A-Wing box.

* Originals or Prequels: Original trilogy is my favorite by far, but I did really enjoy Revenge of the Sith.

* Favorite quote from the movies: “Stay on target.”

* Loose or Mint on Cards:  Either way is fine by me.  I really like the design process that went into the vintage packaging though.  Having items still in their package is a nice way to be able to appreciate the end result of all that hard work.

* Vintage or Modern: Vintage will always be my favorite, but there are a lot of neat modern things as well.

* Collection location: My basement.  A large portion of my collection is also on loan to the Steve Meister collection.

* Novels or comics: Neither.

* Dark Side or Light Side: It’s all good.

* Star Wars dream job: Special effects technician at ILM.
