Lifesize Jar Jar

The club received this email from Justine Moore, Assistant Producer for New Media….Yeah, we know it’s Jar Jar but if there is interest then let’s spread the word.

Hi! My name is Justine Moore and I am a web developer at CET in Cincinnati, which is a public television station. Wednesday, April 15th marks the first day of our annual “Action Auction”. I wanted to email your club as we have an item that will be auctioned off that I feel is something that would strike a chord with your members. It’s a life-sized statue of Jar Jar Binks. Being a Star Wars fan myself, I know Jar Jar is by no means a fan-favorite, but I thought perhaps from a collector’s point-of-view, it may be of some interest to someone out there! He gets auctioned off on Saturday. Being a tv station, this would be directed more towards the members in the Cincinnati & surrounding area, but I’m sure if someone outside of our viewing range really wanted him, we could accommodate.

Here’s a link to a video for more information on Jar Jar :

DCSWCC Celebrates their 5th Anniversary!

DCSWCC NOW FIVE YEARS OLD

A long time ago, in our nation’s capital region.

August 19, 2008 marked the fifth anniversary of The Washington DC Metro Area Star Wars Collecting Club (DCSWCC). Back in the summer of 2003, Mike Kurtz
convened 18 local die-hard Star Wars collectors in a library basement.
DCSWCC is now one of the largest and most active Star Wars collecting clubs
in America, with over 110 members. The club meets monthly and holds special
events such as socials and “Roadshow” appraisal events throughout the year.
DCSWCC members have attended all major Star Wars events and held prominent
volunteer positions at JediCon in West Virginia, Celebration III in
Indianapolis, Celebration IV in Los Angeles, Celebration Europe in London,
and Celebration Japan in Tokyo.

Throughout the last five years, DCSWCC and its members have contributed
significantly to the Star Wars fandom and have supported children of the local communities. Mainly through sales of exclusive Lucasfilm-sanctioned
cloisonne lapel pins featuring Yoda, Chewbacca, and Boba Fett, DCSWCC has
raised over $14,000 for charities such as DC Children’s Hospital, The
Children’s Inn at NIH, the Aluminum Cans for Burned Children Program, United
Mitochondrial Disease Fund, and the 501st’s Katie Johnson Fund. In
addition, members have donated countless canned goods and toys to local food
pantries and Toys for Tots campaigns.

DCSWCC’s latest charity pin drive is still underway, with less than 200 pins
remaining. You can help them reach their goal of $6000 — please visit http://store.dcswcc.org and order your pin now!

Happy belated birthday, DCSWCC!

Falcon

Hasbro just released the all new, extremely improved Falcon and customizer Peter Clute saw even more potential to improve it. More paint detail, motion and infrared sensors and some LED’s and it goes from pretty cool to darn near the real thing. (Shooting model, not the real real thing..)

Check it out over at Gizmodo.

Robot nurses straight from ‘Star Wars’

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

ENGINEERS at the University of Warwick are helping to design ‘R2D2′-type robo nurses which could be in hospitals by 2020. i-WARD is the name of the £2.6 million collaborative EU funded three-year project.

It stands for Intelligent Robot Swarm for Attendance, Recognition, Cleaning and Delivery.

Collaborator Simon Thiel, of Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering in Stuttgart, Germany, said: “We are all big Star Wars fans.”
